For federal IRS verification, there is a search for tax exempt organizations on the IRS website, however you will not directly find Holy Ascension using that search, because Holy Ascension is in a group of churches listed under the parent organization called The Orthodox Church in America, (the “OCA”) which DOES appear in that search, the tax-ID for which is 11-2654661.    You can find out more about how IRS group exemptions work here.

Besides using that search, you can verify that the OCA is a tax-exempt entity by viewing their official letter from the IRS, and you can verify that it is our umbrella organization by viewing this letter.

You can also directly verify the relationship between the OCA and Holy Ascension from the documents made available from the IRS website, although it is a little circuitous.

Firstly go to the IRS page that lists all non-profits by state.

Download the “Michigan” file and find our parish in that list by searching for our tax ID, which is 382932306.  Then look at the “group” column and you will find that it says we are in group 2365.

Then return to the the list of all non-profits by state and download the file for New York.  Search that file for the OCA by using their tax ID (11-2654661), and you will find that their “group” column lists the name number, 2365.
